Whey Protein Powders Are Good For You, Aren’t They?

If you’re like me, you like to make things as simple as possible – and that includes meal preparation. That’s why it’s been a daily habit for me to drink a whey protein shake each morning for breakfast over the last several years. It’s easy and extremely healthy, or so I thought… turns out it wasn’t doing me much good at all. In fact, I’ve since learned that the majority of whey protein powders on the market are just a waste of money.

Malnutrition Is More Common Than You Think

Did you know that many people just like you and me suffer from malnutrition and don’t even know it? There are a number of reasons this can happen, even if you take a multivitamin each and every day like I have for most of my life. Here’s my take on why I spent nearly all of my adult years under-nourished without knowing it and why you might be in a similar situation too…

First, food is simply not as nutrient-rich as it once was. The tomato you buy at the grocery store is nowhere near as healthy as the juicy, bright red one you ate straight from the garden or got from the local farmer as a kid. Vegetables grown in the ground rely on the quality of soil for their composition -whether it’s good or bad.

With all the progress we’ve made as an industrialized nation, our food supply has suffered due to various environmental and man-made situations. These days, produce grown in a conventional way is just not as healthy as it once was. And, it’s potentially dangerous if excess pesticides are used as well. These concerns spread into other foods, including whey. Here’s why: Animals that produce meat products eat those same polluted crops we do – and we end up consuming the bad stuff in more concentrated doses from these protein sources.

Another major reason we’re not properly nourished is because our bodies fail to absorb the vitamins and minerals we take in for one reason or another. Maybe you think your diet is fairly clean – and maybe it is for the most part. I always thought I ate healthy food choices overall, especially compared to others around me. In the past several months though, I’ve identified a couple of areas that were less than ideal for me. If you take a really close look at your situation, perhaps you’ll be able to pinpoint some areas for improvement too.

Is Your Whey Protein Powder Actually Working?

Both absorption and purity issues were problems when it came to the whey protein shake I had been enjoying all those years. You see, when whey protein is processed with heat it becomes damaged and cannot be used fully by the body. In other words, the nutrients are not properly absorbed and you don’t get the same benefit you thought you were getting. And unless the whey comes from grass fed cows that have not been injected with antibiotics and growth hormones, purity is an issue and you end up taking in all of that garbage as well. In the end, your healthy start to the day may actually be doing more harm than good.

Now I make it a point to use organic whey protein powders that are cold processed and produced by grass fed cows. It’s a step above your typical health store product and your body truly benefits from getting the high quality fuel that it craves.
